“Many doctors pay their grocery bill with the money of folks who have eaten too much” Anonymous
How can you improve on your time in the grocery store?
But I would feed you with the best of foods. (Psa. 81:16a, NLT)
Do you like to grocery shop? Some people do and some people detest it. Grocery shopping is kind of like death and taxes. We all have to do it! I hear various ends of the spectrum on the subject. Many of our readers shop at health food grocery stores or buy their food from a food co-operative. However, many of our readers may have never been to a health food store–they shop in the traditional grocery stores exclusively.
Many of you may already know this and hopefully you share it with others that you know and love. Two-thirds of your grocery shopping time should be spent on the outside aisles (or perimeter) of the store. Modern day grocery store doors open to the produce section. That’s a great place to begin shopping. Park there for a while. Don’t rush through it. Make it your main menu. Look at all of the wonderful fresh fruit and vegetables. Purpose to try a new vegetable that you and your family haven’t eaten before. Get excited about having eggplant for the first time.
Many stores lead into either the dairy or meat section of the store next. Be selective about your choices. Always choose real butter over margarine. Choose organic yogurt without artificial sweeteners. Look for fresh meats without hormones or antibiotics. They are becoming more and more common. Usually frozen vegetables and fruits are still on the perimeter of the store. Look for frozen fruits without added sugar. The outside aisles of the store are where you’ll find mostly God-type foods. Very few foods in the inside aisles offer much nutritive value. Canned organic beans such as pinto beans or black beans, canned tomato products, salsa, and canned pineapple in its own juice are a few good food items in the inside aisles.
Today’s recipe uses vegetables and rice. Look for organic, brown, basmati rice. It should be in the regular grocery store near the white, polished, no-nutrition rice.
